Orador Herbicide - Acetochlor + Mesotrione + Clopyralid Three-Way Corn Herbicide for Pre- and Postemergence Weed Control

Orador Herbicide from Atticus LLC is a three-way emulsifiable concentrate herbicide combining acetochlor (31%), mesotrione (3.3%), and clopyralid (2.7%) plus the crop safener furilazole, for broad-spectrum preemergence and postemergence control of annual grasses and broadleaf weeds in corn. Orador contains the same three active ingredients as Resicore and Resicore REV, and at slightly higher active ingredient concentrations per gallon than Resicore REV - delivering the same trusted three-mode-of-action program that corn growers rely on for season-long weed control against economically damaging species, including waterhemp, Palmer amaranth, marestail, giant ragweed, foxtails, and more. The combination of Group 15 (acetochlor), Group 27 (mesotrione), and Group 4 (clopyralid) provides overlapping residual and contact activity across both grass and broadleaf species, with a wide application window that extends from preplant through early postemergence in field corn. Orador is labeled for field corn, field seed corn, field silage corn, and yellow popcorn, and is compatible with UAN fertilizer as a spray carrier.

Key Benefits

  • Three modes of action in a single pass - Groups 15, 27, and 4 work together to control a broad spectrum of annual grasses and broadleaf weeds, including resistant biotypes, reducing the risk of any one group failing under selection pressure.
  • Higher AI load than Resicore REV - Orador contains slightly higher percentages of all three active ingredients per gallon than Resicore REV, delivering a concentrated, cost-competitive three-way program for growers seeking the Resicore chemistry at an economical price.
  • Wide application window - labeled for preplant (up to 28 days before planting), preemergence, and postemergence (up to 11 inches of corn height) applications in field corn, giving growers flexibility to fit Orador into a wide range of agronomic programs and planting schedules.
  • Controls waterhemp and Palmer amaranth - acetochlor (Group 15) and mesotrione (Group 27) both provide effective activity on these challenging resistant species when applied at labeled rates, giving Orador two effective modes of action where it counts most.
  • Crop safener included - furilazole is incorporated in the formulation to improve corn tolerance, particularly under the stress conditions that can increase sensitivity to acetochlor.
  • UAN fertilizer compatible - may be applied in 28-0-0 or 32-0-0 UAN solution as a spray carrier (except for postemergence applications in emerged corn), simplifying logistics and supporting combination fertilizer/herbicide application programs.
  • Broad tank-mix flexibility - can be combined with atrazine, glyphosate, glufosinate, paraquat, and other registered corn herbicides to expand or customize the weed control spectrum; use a burndown partner preplant or at application to control emerged weeds present at application.

Target Weeds

Orador provides preemergence and postemergence control or suppression of a broad spectrum of annual grass and broadleaf weeds in corn, including economically important species such as:

Annual grasses: Barnyardgrass, foxtails (giant, green, yellow), crabgrass, fall panicum, prairie cupgrass, shattercane, and others.

Annual broadleaf weeds: Waterhemp, Palmer amaranth, common ragweed, giant ragweed, marestail/horseweed, lambsquarters, velvetleaf, pigweed species, morningglory species, black nightshade, annual smartweeds, prickly sida, jimsonweed, Venice mallow, and others.

Note: Orador will not provide consistent control of emerged grass weeds at application. For postemergence control of emerged grass weeds, a separate grass herbicide tank mix is recommended. Clopyralid contributes primarily to broadleaf control and has limited activity on Amaranthus species (waterhemp/Palmer amaranth) - control of these species at labeled rates depends primarily on acetochlor (Group 15) and mesotrione (Group 27). Do not use on soils with greater than 10% organic matter. See Tables 4 and 5 on the label for the complete weeds controlled list.

Application Rates & Timing

Rates are determined by soil texture group (coarse, medium, fine) and organic matter content per Table 3 of the label. Apply in 5–20 gallons of water per acre for ground broadcast or 5–15 gallons per acre for aerial applications; or in 10–40 gallons of UAN fertilizer solution per acre for ground applications (preplant or preemergence only - not for use with liquid fertilizer as a carrier postemergence in emerged corn):

  • Maximum application rate: 3.25 quarts per acre per application; do not apply more than 3.25 quarts per acre per year; do not make more than two applications per year
  • Annual maximum AI limits (including all sources):
    • Acetochlor: 3.00 lb ai/acre/year (Orador contributes 2.80 lb/gal; 0.70 lb/qt)
    • Mesotrione: 0.24 lb ai/acre/year (Orador contributes 0.30 lb/gal; 0.075 lb/qt)
    • Clopyralid: 0.25 lb ae/acre/year (Orador contributes 0.187 lb/gal; 0.047 lb/qt)
  • Preplant: Apply up to 28 days before planting; use a burndown herbicide (glyphosate, glufosinate, paraquat, and/or 2,4-D) to control weeds emerged at application
  • Preemergence: Apply after planting but before crop emergence; applications before crop emergence are required for yellow popcorn (do not apply after corn emergence or severe crop injury may occur)
  • Postemergence (field corn only): Apply to emerged field corn up to 11 inches in height; apply when broadleaf weeds are less than 3 inches tall; do not use UAN as a carrier for postemergence applications; occasional leaf burn may occur, but will not affect final yield under normal conditions; do not apply postemergence in a tank mix with organophosphate or carbamate insecticides
  • Preharvest interval (PHI): Do not apply within 45 days of harvest for ears and forage, or within 60 days of harvest for stover

Rotational crop restrictions: Orador carries a clopyralid component with meaningful rotational crop intervals. Key intervals include: wheat (4 months); alfalfa, barley, oats, soybeans, sunflower, and sorghum (10.5 months in most states; 12 months in ID, NV, OR, UT, WA); cotton (12 months); all other rotational crops (18 months). Extended intervals apply in low-rainfall western states and for sensitive soil/rainfall combinations. See Table 1 on the label for the complete rotation schedule and state-specific footnotes.

Important use restrictions: Do not apply within 50 feet of a well where groundwater is 30 feet or less in sandy soils low in organic matter. Do not apply through any irrigation system; a sprinkler system may be used after application to incorporate the product (0.5–1.0 inch of water). Do not use on white popcorn or ornamental (Indian) corn. Do not apply to emerged yellow popcorn. Do not apply postemergence in liquid fertilizer solution or with organophosphate/carbamate insecticides.

Clopyralid forage and compost notice: Do not sell or transport treated plant materials or manure from animals that have grazed treated fields off-site for compost or animal bedding use for 18 months after application. Clopyralid residues can persist in compost and plant materials and may injure sensitive broadleaf crops (tomatoes, potatoes, beans, lettuce) if treated compost is applied to those crops. Animals fed clopyralid-treated forage must be fed clopyralid-free forage for at least 3 days before manure is collected near sensitive crops.

ALWAYS READ AND FOLLOW LABEL DIRECTIONS BEFORE USE.

Why Professionals Choose Orador

Corn growers who have built their weed control programs around the Resicore chemistry will find Orador delivers the same three-mode-of-action combination - acetochlor, mesotrione, and clopyralid - at slightly higher AI concentrations per gallon and a price that reflects the economics of a generic formulation rather than a branded one. The wide application window from preplant through 11-inch corn height, UAN fertilizer compatibility, and flexible tank-mix options with atrazine, glyphosate, and burndown partners give Orador the operational versatility to fit virtually any corn weed management program. For growers managing waterhemp, Palmer amaranth, and giant ragweed under high resistance pressure, the two effective modes of action that these species face from Orador make it a sound, resistance-conscious foundation for the herbicide program.
