Prowl H2O Herbicide - Pendimethalin 38.7% Water-Based Preemergence Herbicide

Prowl H2O Herbicide from BASF is a water-based, microencapsulated formulation of pendimethalin at 38.7% (3.8 lb ai/gallon) - a Group 3 dinitroaniline herbicide that provides broad-spectrum preemergence control of most annual grasses and certain broadleaf weeds as they germinate. The aqueous capsule suspension technology gives Prowl H2O real practical advantages over older pendimethalin formulations: no odor, reduced equipment staining, greater storage temperature flexibility, better performance in high-surface-residue conditions, and a lower effective use rate. It does not control already-emerged weeds, so it's best used as a residual foundation layer alone or tank-mixed with a burndown partner. With label coverage spanning corn, soybeans, cotton, wheat, potatoes, sunflower, peanuts, tree fruit and nut crops, vegetables, and more than 100 crops in total, Prowl H2O is one of the most versatile preemergence herbicides available for building a resistance-conscious weed management program.

Key Benefits

  • Water-based, low-odor formulation - the microencapsulated aqueous suspension eliminates the odor and reduces the equipment staining associated with older EC pendimethalin products.
  • Excellent surface stability - reduced binding to crop residue means Prowl H2O stays available at the soil surface for germinating weed seeds even under heavier trash or no-till conditions.
  • Broad-spectrum residual grass and broadleaf control - controls foxtails, barnyardgrass, sandbur, wild oat, johnsongrass (seedling), henbit, pigweed/amaranth species, carpetweed, mustard, smartweed, shepherd's-purse, purslane, and more.
  • No incorporation required - unlike older pendimethalin products, Prowl H2O performs well as a surface-applied treatment without mechanical incorporation.
  • Exceptionally broad crop label - registered for over 100 crops including corn, soybeans, cotton, wheat, potatoes, sunflower, peanuts, alfalfa, tree fruit and nut crops, grapes, vegetables, and more.
  • Strong resistance management tool - a Group 3 mode of action provides an effective rotation partner alongside ALS-, glyphosate-, and other site-of-action herbicides.

Labeled Crops

Prowl H2O is registered for use on over 100 crops, including: alfalfa, artichoke, asparagus, brassica head and stem vegetables, carrot, celery, citrus (bearing and nonbearing), corn (field, seed, sweet, pop), cotton, edible beans, fallow, fruiting vegetables, garlic, grain sorghum, grapes (bearing and nonbearing), hops, leek, lentils and peas, melons, mint, nut trees (bearing and nonbearing), olive trees, onions and shallots, peanut, perennial grasses grown for seed, pome and stone fruit trees, pomegranate, potato, rice, safflower, soybean, strawberry, sugarcane, sunflower, tobacco, triticale, warm- and cool-season forage grasses, and wheat. See the current label for the complete crop list, rates, and use restrictions specific to each crop.

Application Rates & Timing

Rates vary by crop and soil texture - refer to the crop-specific rate tables on the label. Prowl H2O will not control already-emerged weeds; apply before weed germination or tank mix with a burndown herbicide to control emerged weeds:

  • Corn: Wide application window from preplant surface through early postemergence (up to the 4-leaf stage); can be applied in liquid fertilizer as a carrier for preemergence use
  • Soybeans, cotton, wheat, and most row crops: Preplant surface, preemergence, or early postemergence depending on crop; general broadcast rate range of 1.1-4.2 qt/acre depending on soil type and crop
  • Established Bermudagrass and other perennial warm-season forage grasses/pastures/rangeland: 1.1-4.2 qt/acre in the dormant season or between cuttings; no PHI for forage, hay, or grazing; max cumulative 4.2 qt/A/year
  • Dry bulb onions (delayed preemergence, per supplemental label): 1.0-3.0 pt/acre depending on soil texture; do not exceed 3.0 pt/A/year; ground application only; PHI 45 days; do not graze or feed treated foliage to livestock
  • Ground application: Minimum 5 gallons of water per acre for most uses (10+ gal/A for onions)
  • Chemigation and aerial application: Available on many labeled crops - follow specific chemigation and spray drift directions on the label
  • Dry bulk fertilizer impregnation: Minimum 200 lbs of impregnated fertilizer per acre (excluding ammonium nitrate carriers, which are prohibited)

Overapplication, uneven application, or excessive soil incorporation can reduce weed control or cause crop injury. Seedling diseases, cold weather, excessive moisture, improper planting depth, or soil pH extremes can increase the risk of crop injury. Do not apply if surface water is present in the field.

ALWAYS READ AND FOLLOW LABEL DIRECTIONS BEFORE USE.
