Ballast Herbicide - Imazapyr + Flumioxazin Pre & Post Bareground Vegetation Control for Roadsides, Rail, Utility & Industrial Sites

Ballast from Alligare is a non-selective, soluble concentrate herbicide that pairs two modes of action — imazapyr (36.11%, 2.75 lb ae/gal) and flumioxazin (10.78%, 1.0 lb/gal) — for bareground weed control that works both through the foliage and in the soil. Flumioxazin (Group 14) burns down emerged weeds quickly and builds a residual barrier, while imazapyr (Group 2) is absorbed by leaves and roots to control tough grasses, perennials, and brush and extend residual control. Combining two groups in one jug makes it a strong fit for gravel, rail, utility, and industrial sites where you want one pass to clean up existing vegetation and keep new weeds from coming back, while helping manage herbicide resistance.

Key Benefits

  • Two modes of action - Group 14 (flumioxazin) plus Group 2 (imazapyr) for burndown and extended residual in a single product.
  • Pre- and postemergence activity - controls emerged broadleaves, grasses, and many perennials, then keeps working in the soil on new germination (activated by 1/2 inch of rain or irrigation).
  • Broad weed spectrum - the label covers pigweeds, morningglory, thistles, ragweed, bermudagrass, johnsongrass, crabgrass, foxtails, and tough perennials such as cogongrass, giant reed, phragmites, and Japanese knotweed.
  • Tank-mix flexible - labeled partners include glyphosate, diuron, triclopyr, metsulfuron, picloram, and aminopyralid products for expanded postemergence control.

Technical Information

  • Active Ingredients: Imazapyr, isopropylamine salt - 36.11% (2.75 lb ae/gal); Flumioxazin - 10.78% (1.0 lb/gal)
  • Formulation: Soluble Concentrate (SC)
  • Herbicide Groups: 2 (ALS inhibitor) and 14 (PPO inhibitor)
  • EPA Reg. No.: 81927-85

Use Sites & Target Vegetation

For use on: non-crop sites where bare ground is desired, including roadsides, highway medians, improved roadsides and gravel shoulders, roads, railroad crossings, beds, and yards, industrial and utility plant sites, substations, petroleum tank farms, pumping installations, storage areas, and above-ground pipelines. Do not use on food or feed crops, Christmas trees, or lawns.

Controls: broadleaf weeds such as pigweed, waterhemp, morningglory, mallow, nightshade, ragweed, thistles, dandelion, dock, spurge, and velvetleaf; grasses such as bermudagrass, crabgrass, foxtail, johnsongrass, barnyardgrass, quackgrass, and torpedograss; and perennial and woody species including blackberry, broom snakeweed, gray rabbitbrush, giant reed, cogongrass, phragmites, Japanese knotweed, and cattail. Some species on the label are controlled preemergence only; adding glyphosate improves postemergence control of those.

Application Rates & Timing

  • Bareground broadcast: 32 to 48 fl oz/A. Use the higher rate for longer residual; heavy rainfall and high temperatures shorten it.
  • Maximums: 48 fl oz/A per application and 68 fl oz/A per year, with no more than 2 applications per year and at least 30 days between them.
  • Postemergence adjuvant: add crop oil concentrate (at least 15% emulsifier / 80% oil) or a nonionic surfactant (at least 80% active). Ammonium sulfate (2.0-2.5 lb/A) or 28-32% nitrogen (1-2 qt/A) may be added but does not replace the oil or surfactant.
  • Burndown partner: glyphosate is recommended for initial burndown where weeds are already established.
  • Spray volume: ground broadcast at least 15 gal/A (use more as weeds emerge); handgun at least 40 gal/A; helicopter 5-10 gal/A at no more than 40 psi.
  • Activation: needs at least 1/2 inch of rain or irrigation, ideally within 2-3 weeks after application.

Important restrictions: helicopter application only, no fixed-wing aircraft. Do not apply within 300 ft of non-dormant pome or stone fruit, to areas with surface water or water used for irrigation, or where runoff is likely. Imazapyr can move through soil to the roots of desirable trees and shrubs, so keep it off and away from desirable vegetation and avoid rotational crop injury from soil carryover. Do not apply to moist or wet desirable foliage, through any irrigation system, in winds above 10 mph, or during temperature inversions. Mix and apply only in stainless steel, fiberglass, plastic, or plastic-lined steel equipment, keep the spray water at pH 5-7, and apply within 48 hours of mixing. Perform a jar test before first use or with new adjuvants and water sources.

ALWAYS READ AND FOLLOW LABEL DIRECTIONS BEFORE USE.
