Diuron 4L Herbicide - Residual Pre & Post Weed Control for Orchards, Vineyards, Alfalfa, Cotton, Asparagus & Specialty Crops

Currently switching from Drexel to Alligare Diuron 4L, may receive either product.

Diuron 4L from Alligare is a liquid flowable, soil-residual herbicide containing 40.7% diuron (4 lb per gallon). Diuron is a Group 7 photosynthesis inhibitor that is absorbed by roots and moves up into the leaves of germinating weeds, giving long residual control of annual grasses and broadleaves before they emerge, and burndown of small emerged seedlings when applied with a surfactant. It has been a staple in tree fruit, nut, citrus, vineyard, alfalfa, cotton, asparagus, and sugarcane programs for decades because one well-timed application keeps the row or orchard floor clean for months. The flowable formulation mixes easily in water, is noncorrosive and nonflammable, and is a cost-effective residual partner to build weed programs around.

Key Benefits

  • Long residual control - stops germinating annual grasses and broadleaves such as crabgrass, foxtail, pigweed, lambsquarters, ragweed, chickweed, and annual bluegrass for months.
  • Pre- and early postemergence - activated by rainfall or irrigation, with postemergence activity on small seedling annuals when a surfactant is added.
  • Wide crop list - labeled for established orchards, groves, vineyards, alfalfa, asparagus, cotton, sugarcane, pineapple, hybrid poplar and tree plantings, grass seed, and more.
  • Tank-mix ready - partners on the label include glyphosate, paraquat, terbacil (Sinbar), trifluralin, and bromoxynil depending on the crop.
  • Easy to handle - liquid flowable, noncorrosive to equipment, nonflammable, and nonvolatile.

Technical Information

  • Active Ingredient: Diuron - 40.7% (4.0 lb/gallon)
  • Formulation: Liquid flowable (flowable suspension)
  • Herbicide Group: 7 (Photosystem II inhibitor / urea)
  • EPA Reg. No.: 81927-44
  • Re-Entry Interval (REI): 12 hours (agricultural uses); for non-agricultural uses, keep out until sprays have dried

Use Sites & Target Vegetation

For use on: established alfalfa, apple, pear, peach, citrus, pecan, filbert, English walnut, olive, macadamia, papaya, banana/plantain, grape, blueberry, caneberry, and gooseberry; asparagus and artichoke; cotton, field corn, and grain sorghum (directed or preplant uses); winter wheat, barley, oats, and triticale in specified regions; sugarcane and pineapple; peppermint; grass seed crops; bermudagrass pastures; hybrid poplar and other tree plantings; and certain ornamental bulbs. Aerial application is allowed on some uses (alfalfa, winter barley and wheat, preplant or preemergence cotton, grass seed, sugarcane, and rights-of-way) and is prohibited on many tree, vine, and vegetable crops. Not for use on home plantings, lawns, walks, driveways, or tennis courts.

Controls: barnyardgrass, crabgrass, lambsquarters, pigweed, purslane, and ragweed at the lower rates; annual bluegrass, chickweed, foxtail, shepherd's purse, wild buckwheat, wild mustard, and similar species at mid rates; and horseweed, kochia, velvetleaf, sandbur, annual ryegrass, and seedling johnsongrass at higher rates. Partial control only of cocklebur, prickly sida, sicklepod, horsenettle, and quackgrass. See the label for the complete weed list by rate.

Application Rates & Timing

Rates depend on crop, soil texture, and organic matter: use the lower rate on coarse soils and the higher rate on fine soils. The label does not allow use on sand, loamy sand, or gravelly soils for most crops, or on soils below the minimum organic matter listed for each crop (generally 1%). Representative broadcast rates:

  • Alfalfa (established 1+ year): 1.2 to 2.4 qt/A in fall or winter after dormancy (timing varies by region); max 2.4 qt/A per year, once per year.
  • Apple & pear (trees established 1+ year): 3.2 qt/A in spring; max 3.2 qt/A per year. Not for full-dwarf rootstocks (pear).
  • Peach: 1.6 to 2.2 qt/A in early spring on trees established 3+ years (California 1.6-3.0 qt/A). Not within 3 months of harvest.
  • Citrus: 1.6 to 3.2 qt/A per application depending on region; max 3.2 qt/A per application and 6.4 qt/A per year across all diuron products (Highland Co., FL: 4.8 qt/A). Florida is band application only.
  • Grape (established 3+ years): band application only, typically 1.6 to 4.8 qt/A depending on region and organic matter; max 4 qt/A per application and 8 qt/A per year.
  • Asparagus (established): 0.8 to 1.6 qt/A on light soils, 1.6 to 3.2 qt/A on heavier soils.
  • Pecan: 1.6 to 3.2 qt/A by soil type, alone, or reduced rates tank-mixed with Sinbar, in spring with at least 30 gal/A.
  • Cotton: preplant or preemergence 0.8 to 1.6 qt/A by soil texture, 15-45 days before planting for preplant; directed postemergence and lay-by rates of 0.4 to 1.2 qt/A. Seasonal soil-specific caps apply; do not spray over the top of cotton.
  • Sugarcane: 1.6 to 3.2 qt/A preemergence, with sequential and directed applications by region (see label for state-by-state totals).
  • Hybrid poplar & tree plantings: 0.8 to 2.4 qt/A by soil type in the Northwest; 2.0 to 4.0 qt/A as a 4-ft band in the Plains states, on plantings established at least 1 year.

Use a calibrated boom sprayer with 50-mesh or coarser screens and continuous agitation, medium or coarser spray, and ground nozzle height no more than 2 ft above the crop or ground. Do not apply in winds above 10 mph or below 2 mph, or during temperature inversions. A minimum of 3 gal/A is required for aerial application.

Important restrictions: most crops have a 1-year replant interval (2 years for grass seed and banana/plantain, with shorter intervals for some cotton, corn, and sorghum uses), and a field bioassay is recommended where irrigation is reduced or summer fallow occurs. Do not graze livestock in treated orchards, groves, papaya, or cotton, or on bermudagrass pasture within 70 days of application. Do not apply directly to water, to areas with surface water, or to intertidal areas, and do not drain or flush equipment near desirable plants. Some weed biotypes are resistant to diuron, so tank mix or rotate modes of action where resistance is suspected. Use in California, Oregon, and Washington is subject to the injunctive relief order in Washington Toxics Coalition et al. v. EPA; check the label and your state requirements before use.

ALWAYS READ AND FOLLOW LABEL DIRECTIONS BEFORE USE.
